STS innovates to enable watchmakers to cope with soaring rhodium prices

Within just a few months, rhodium has become the most expensive metal in the world. Today it sells for more than CHF 600 per gram—an amount 13 times the price of gold! This increase is bad news for the watchmaking industry, which applies rhodium to its ébauche movements.

Anxious to find a solution to this price explosion and as the largest consumer of rhodium in Switzerland for coating movement parts, STS has mobilised its R&D teams over the past year to design and test alternative solutions to rhodium. These alternatives have the same properties and technical characteristics, but they come at a much lower cost.

This research has resulted in several alternative solutions which are proving very conclusive. These include a novel formula that uses white platinum with a new chemical preparation and innovative technology, for a result and colour identical to rhodium.
